Preserving an environment of free speech
As a public institution of higher education, the University of Arkansas supports an open exchange of ideas, and works to preserve and protect freedom of speech for our campus community and those who seek to engage in free expression, while preserving the campus for its primary purpose of education.
The U.S. Constitution enumerates freedom of speech as a fundamental right, and the Arkansas Constitution includes similar protections. The university’s policies support promoting a robust exchange and critical evaluation of diverse viewpoints.
It is important to remember that freedom of speech is not simply applicable to speech that we may embrace or admire – it also applies to speech we may abhor and denounce.
